NARDO’ – Three vehicles on fire in the space of just over 24 hours in the center of Nardò, with flames and damage also to homes and the need for intervention by firefighters, civil protection and law enforcement.
The most recent episode in chronological order, and that of the late morning, occurred in via De Gasperi, the avenue that leads to the Nardò city station. A car, a Mercedes Class A owned by a retired former Carabinieri non-commissioned officer, while in motion, probably due to an electrical fault, caught fire until it was completely engulfed and destroyed by flames.
The driver just had time to pull the vehicle over to the side of the road and take cover once he got out of the car. There were several interventions by traders near the site of the fire, who tried to put it out with the use of six fire extinguishers, supplied to their businesses, but every attempt was in vain.
After the alarm was raised on 115, the firefighters arrived on site and were only able to put out the now completely incinerated carcass of the car. Apart from the damage to the car and the facade of the building under which the unfortunate driver abandoned the car, fortunately there was no damage to people. The local police and law enforcement agencies are on site.
Another episode, the causes of which there is still no certainty and therefore less evidence as to whether it was accidental or not, is what happened on Friday afternoon, around 6pm, in via Galateo, a few tens of meters from the villa in via XX September.
Along the streets of the city, among other things, the White Night of commerce event was already underway. In this case, the flames affected a scooter and a moped parked close to each other on a sidewalk.
Local residents and also the traffic auxiliaries attempted the first interventions to put out the fire and then the fire brigade arrived. The two vehicles were destroyed and the walls of the building in the immediate vicinity were also blackened and damaged. Local police officers, who were already in the area for the event, and police station officers were also on site. Further investigations are also underway with the help of video cameras in the area.
