The woman, mother of the thirteen-year-old with mental deficiency, who gave birth to the newborn found dead inside an abandoned backpack on Sunday morning on the rocks of Villa San Giovanni, near the landing stages, availed herself of the right not to respond.

This morning, the validation hearing was held before the investigating judge Giovanna Sergi who will have to decide on the detention order issued last Wednesday against the woman by the Reggio Calabria Prosecutor’s Office directed by Giovanni Bombardieri.

By tomorrow, the judge for preliminary investigations will have to decide whether to validate the detention and whether to issue the precautionary custody order.

According to the investigations of the flying squad and the carabinieri, coordinated by the deputy prosecutor Walter Ignazitto and the prosecutor Tommaso Pozzati, the woman, immediately after giving birth to her thirteen-year-old daughter, worked to place the baby, who had just been born alive, inside a backpack and to abandon it, shortly afterwards, on the cliff in front of the seafront of Villa San Giovanni.

The latter, in fact, was filmed by video surveillance cameras on the seafront as she went with her backpack and then left it among the rocks.

The woman is accused of infanticide in conditions of material and moral abandonment.
