Perez’s accident worries Marko about the impact on the budget cap

The Monaco Grand Prix it was interrupted after just half a lap due to a violent accident involving Sergio Perez and the two Haas cars. The accident, which has interrupted the race, which almost demolished the Red Bull RB20 and caused the withdrawal of the two Haas cars of Kevin Magnussen and Nico Hulkenberg, was not even investigated by the FIA stewards, arousing misunderstanding and frustration on the part of Red Bull. Red Bull super consultant Helmut Marko has expressed his disbelief regarding the FIA’s decision on the accident involving Perez in Monaco.

Perez – Haas accident, Helmut Marko: “2-3 million damage”

The seriousness of the incident and the fact that it was quickly dismissed without basically identifying any culprits surprised everyone a bit. In a Formula 1 that puts safety first, a precedent like this could be a serious threat.

The decision was also commented on by Helmut Marko, who, seeing the conditions of the RB20, raised another problem, namely the economic one. “I was surprised at how quickly they resolved this incident”, the 81-year-old Austrian told Sky Sports after the race. “But unfortunately these are decisions you can hardly influence.” Marko stressed that it is not just about dangerous driving, but that there is another factor at play for Red Bull. “On the one hand there is the danger and on the other the damage, which amounts to two or three million. This has a huge effect on our budget ceiling,” said a disgruntled Marko.

The reaction of Horner and Perez

Red Bull Team Principal Christian Horner also said he was surprised the crash had not been investigated, but praised the way the car protected its driver. “It was a horrible accident and at that point your heart is in your mouth,” Horner said. “The airframe, the halo and everything did their job. The most important thing is that Checo managed to escape unscathed from what looked like a very bad accident.”

“Kevin’s driving was dangerous, keeping the accelerator at full throttle knowing that at some point there would be contact,” said Pérez, still shocked by the accident. “You have to ask why it wasn’t investigated because without an investigation you don’t get a sanction. I’m really surprised.”

Furthermore, Magnussen would only need 2 points less on his license for automatic disqualification from a Grand Prix.
