the Region is working on the law – Sanremonews.it

Even in Liguria, owners of dogs considered dangerous must have the patent. The regional council unanimously voted on the agenda presented by the League through the voice of the deputy group leader Sonia Viale and aimed at the introduction of a regional law for the compulsory driving licence. In Liguria, especially in Ponente, the topic is particularly felt also in light of various news episodes, above all the tragic death of Patrizia La Marca, mauled by a rottweiler in Soldano, and the serious injury of the child attacked by a pitbull in Vallecrosia. And then several cases of attacks by dogs, especially Molossoids, against passers-by or other dogs.

So much so that the Municipality of Sanremo had moved to organize with the Local Health Authority and the Order of Veterinary Doctors and in collaboration with Enpa and Lega del Cane to organize a course preparatory to obtaining the license and which reached the maximum number of registrations within a few days.

As tragically certified by the most recent news events, attacks on people and other animals by dogs belonging to certain special breeds are increasingly numerous and sometimes have dramatic results – Like this Sonia Vialedeputy group leader of the League in the Liguria Region – for the welfare of animals, for the owners themselves and to protect public safety, I believe the time has come to take action. My proposal is already being implemented in several municipalities in Italy and provides for the obligation to have a license for all owners of dogs of problematic breeds that require greater attention. To obtain it it will be possible to attend special courses organized by the Region, through the veterinary services of the local health authorities to learn how to manage the animals in question with a sense of responsibility and civic education. It has been established that the dog’s breed does not determine its character and that there are no dangerous breeds, but that the animal’s behavior is instead linked to other factors, such as the environment in which it grows, its age and that often the dogs that become aggressive animals emerge from violence and illegal fighting, only those who have acquired certain skills will be able to manage them in the best possible way with awareness and responsibility in the interests of the well-being of the animal and of the entire community”.

After the vote in the council, the Region will now have to work on drafting of the law along the lines of many Italian municipalities that have adopted the license some time ago. An additional move to raise awareness among dog owners who, in certain conditions and if subjected to particularly stressful situations, can become a danger to humans and other animals.
