Palliative care, 4,500 patients followed in Liguria: “Treating to heal is often possible, taking care for relief is always possible”

Liguria. Relief Day, which is celebrated tomorrow, Sunday 26 May, was established with a directive issued in 2001 by the Presidency of the Council of Ministers with the aim of promoting and demonstrating, through appropriate information and through awareness and solidarity initiatives, the culture of relief from physical and moral suffering in favor of all those who are completing their life journey, no longer able to benefit from treatments intended for recovery.

“It is a day of great importance which leads us to remember that caring to heal is often possible, but caring for relief is always possible. Palliative care services – explains the health councilor of the Liguria Region – follow around 4,500 patients in Liguria every year, mainly cancer patients, of which over half in the Metropolitan Area of Genoa. The services are ensured by multi-professional teams of doctors, nurses, health professionals, physiotherapists, psychologists, social workers who work in the area, also in collaboration and integration with non-profit organisations, with the network of hospital professionals and general practitioners”.

In 2013, Liguria with the pain-free hospital-territory project, in application of law 15 March 2010, n. 38 and the State-Regions Agreement of 28 October 2010, identified a pain therapy network coordinated by Alisa.

“The regional pain therapy network – explains Filippo Ansaldi, General Director of Alisa – has as its objectives, among others, to guarantee a homogeneous offer throughout the Ligurian territory, the training of new “pain therapists”, the reduction of visits to the emergency room for patients who can be followed by specific treatment paths, greater user knowledge on how to access pain therapy centers and timely intervention on painful pathologies, before they become chronic with repercussions on costs incurred of the public health service”.

EVENT: RELIEF DAY: Monday 27 May 2024, Ligurian Representative Hall in the World, 11th floor of Tower A – Via Fieschi, 15 Liguria Region.

The awareness event of the regional Pain Therapy Network was created to answer the question “Where are we?”, with the aim of presenting the state of the art of pain management in healthcare in the Liguria Region: it is organized on the occasion of the ” Relief Day” and is promoted by the regional coordination group, in particular the training focus working subgroup.
