Massimiliano Pescini, former mayor of San Casciano and current regional councilor of the Democratic Party, passed away due to a fulminant tumor at the age of 49. Dismay, pain and condolence in Tuscan politics and institutions. As a sign of mourning, flags at half-mast at Palazzo Medici Riccardi.

Originally from Mercatale Val di Pesa (Florence), with a degree in modern literature, Pescini completed a period of research doctorate and then worked for a publishing house as an author, editor and proofreader. Elected municipal councilor in San Casciano Val di Pesa (Florence) in 1999, he was group leader of the Ulivo from 2002 to 2004. From 2004 to 2009 he was councilor for schools, the environment and local public services. He was coordinator of the conference of mayors of the Florentine and Sienese Chianti from 2010 to 2013 and responsible for Anci Tuscany for land registry and local taxation. From 2009 to 2019 he was mayor of the municipality of San Casciano. He joined the PD secretariat in 2018 and was responsible for local authorities until December 2020, when he was appointed coordinator of the Tuscany PD secretariat. In September 2020 he was elected to the Regional Council in the Firenze 2 constituency, an area that includes Chianti, Mugello, Valdarno, Valdisieve, Fiesole and Vaglia. He held the role of deputy group leader of the Democratic Party in the Regional Council and as commissioner of the first commission and of the European Policies and International Relations Commission.

“Great pain and immense regret for the premature death of Massimiliano Pescini. There are no words to express the heartbreaking pain of the death of a dear friend and loyal colleague who leaves us.” The mayor of Florence Dario Nardella thus expresses its condolences on behalf of the city of Florence and the Metropolitan city for the death of Massimiliano Pescini, twice mayor of San Casciano Val Di Pesa and then regional councilor. “Always serving his country of origin and his homeland, he leaves a great void in all of us. I express my deepest personal condolences and those of the Municipality and the Metropolitan City to my partner Marina, to my family and friends, to the Regional Council and to the entire San Casciano community” added the mayor, who as a sign of mourning ordered that the flags of Palazzo Medici Riccardi, seat of the metropolitan city, are put at half mast. “Massimiliano represented the best of politics and institutions. Passionate and competent mayor, militant open to discussion and always, always close to people and their needs. A cultured man, kind and attentive to those around him, he had a quick irony with which he always highlighted the funny aspects of things. Hello Massimiliano, my unforgettable friend, we will all miss you.”

“You left too quickly dear Massimiliano, friend and companion of so much commitment and many battles. Always the figure for us of balance, dialogue, competence and determination in achieving the objectives we set ourselves but so profoundly human as to try to involve everyone in the interest of the community. It is a moment of deep pain for me, the reaction I feel is “it’s not right”, with you one of the best people in sharing this commitment is leaving.

I mourn a friend and traveling companion who I will miss dearly, may the earth be light on you Massi”, the memory of President of the Region Eugenio Giani.

“A great pain, as happens when we lose a loved one, a companion, a friend and a colleague with whom we have shared a part of our life. The premature death of Massimiliano Pescini is a shocking event for all those who knew and loved him in this life journey, which a ferocious and ruthless evil abruptly interrupted, as we would never have wanted or imagined. Now we want to ideally join together with all the people who suffer from the loss of him. A man is leaving who we have learned to appreciate for his human qualities even before his political and administrative ones, in which he had demonstrated his ability to excel. From Mayor of his town to his current commitment in the Regional Council, many people have been able to appreciate his qualities, his passion, his integrity and his ability to deal quietly, with grace, but also with competence and quality, the tasks that he held positions in the institutions and in the party.” With these words, the group leader Vincenzo Ceccarelliexpresses the pain and closeness to the family members of the entire Pd Group.

“Massimiliano has left us. Even before an intelligent and competent politician, who never held back, a friend and a respectable person passes away. A gentleman of politics. An administrator much loved by his community, San Casciano in Val di Pesa, who he administered for many years, finally director and regional councilor, always available to listen, correct, loved in our party and esteemed and respected by all his colleagues, even by opposition benches. May the collective embrace of the Tuscan Democratic Party reach his family. We will soon find opportunities to remember him as he deserves.” As Emiliano Fossi, secretary of the Tuscan Democratic Party.

The note from CGIL Toscana, CGIL Firenze and CGIL Chianti: “Massimiliano Pescini leaves us too soon, we express our condolences and closeness to his family and to his San Casciano community. He was, as mayor of San Casciano val di Pesa and then as regional councilor, a capable administrator and a representative of the institutions always attentive to labor issues, always sensitive to union representation, always available for meetings and discussions. In addition to his political and cultural abilities, the human aspect must also be underlined: Massimiliano Pescini was an attentive and thoughtful person. We will miss him and will be missed by the world of Florentine and Tuscan politics and civil society.”
