First degree sentence for the 2018 accident. Homicide and negligent injury and violation of workplace safety regulations are the alleged crimes

Four sentences for the two workers who died at work in the tragedy that occurred at the Acciaierie Venete in Padua on 13 May 2018, when a ladle (large container) of incandescent steel overturned, overwhelming the workers Sergiu Todita, 39 years old, and Marian Bratu, 44 years old, and injuring two other colleagues seriously.

The Padua court yesterday sentenced Alessandro Banzato, president of Acciaierie Venete, and Giorgio Zùccaro, director of the same plant in via Riviera Francia, to two years and six months for manslaughter in the first instance. Sentence to 4 years and six months, in addition to the ban from public offices for Giancarlo Tònoli, councilor with responsibility for testing of a company of the Danieli group of Udine and six months and 15 days for Vito Nicola Plasmati, manager of another Friulian company of plant maintenance. Two managers, also from the Danieli group, were acquitted of not having committed the crime.

The victims’ families did not take part in the trial. The lawyers of the relatives of Sergiu Todita, 39 years old, who died twenty-four days after the event and Marian Bratu, 44 years old, who died after seven months of suffering, have renounced the appearance in exchange for compensation.
