Giarre, fire emergency: press conference by Mayor Cantarella
Fire emergency, 2024 summer season: the Municipality of Giarre has implemented a series of concrete measures to prevent and combat fires. This morning the measures were illustrated during a press conference held by the Mayor Leo Cantarella, in collaboration with the Forestry Corps. Present at the operational table were councilors Giuseppe Cavallaro, Antonella Santonoceto and Claudio Raciti, the commander of the local police Mariangela Sorbello and the inspectors of the Giarre Forestry Corps Maurizio Strano and Giuseppe Spanò
The annual ordinance for the prevention and risk of forest and interface fires has been issued, valid until 31 October 2024. It establishes the rules to be followed to avoid starting fires and the sanctions for those who violate them. On the operational front, a dedicated team of the Local Police will patrol the areas at risk of fire, in order to promptly identify any outbreaks and alert the firefighters.
The Forestry Corps will intensify surveillance activities in the areas most at risk, with the use of men (15 units), vehicles and 6 lookouts with a control post in Montargano. Seasonal workers will also be deployed starting next Monday to support the Forestry men.
Mayor Cantarella underlined the importance of collaboration between institutions, citizens and volunteers to prevent summer fires and protect the environmental heritage of the area.
