7% weight reduction. Same price

Slimming or shrinkflation is a strategy used by companies and consists of keeping the price of the package unchanged while reducing its contents. A reader tells us that perhaps something similar has happened for Nescafé Dolcegusto capsules too. Below we publish the letter with the company’s response.

The letter on the capsules

Good morning, for some time I have noticed a different taste than usual when I drink my morning coffee. Initially I thought it depended on the production batch of Nescafé Dolcegusto capsules. Looking closer, however, I noticed that perhaps it depends on the weight loss: in fact the number of capsules is the same but the new ones weigh less. Previously the capsules contained 7.0 g of ground coffee blend, now they weigh 6.5 g. The reduction may seem like a small thing, but it is 7% less. Considering tens of millions of capsules, the savings for Nestlé become interesting. However, the price is the same (HarDis, on offer at 11.90), if not slightly higher (Spazio Conad, on offer at 13.90), depends on the point of sale. Greetings, Andrea

The company’s response

As the Nestlé Group, we are constantly engaged in research and use of new technologies capable of improving production processes while ensuring a high level of food safety in all our products.

The reported weight reduction is in fact due to the use of a new technology, accompanied by a new coffee blend, capable of optimizing the roasting process, obtaining the same level of aroma and intensity as the usual recipe. The taste profile of the product, in fact, has remained unchanged.

We attach the image of the Espresso Barista references, which have progressively arrived on shelves in all formats starting from February 2024, with the indication of the new recipe on the front of the pack. Finally, regarding the note on price, we would like to underline that the consumer price always remains at the discretion of the final distributor, in compliance with competition legislation.
