There are various critical situations Veneto due to the flood that hit the region. The intense and abundant rainfall, which occurred in a short period of time, led to extensive and significant flooding involving the inhabited centers of the municipalities of Asolo and Castelfranco Veneto. Further flooding is reported in the municipalities of Quarto d’Altino, Altivole, Casier, Fonte, Mogliano Veneto.
The embankment breach was recorded Muson dei Sassi in the municipality of Camposampiero with the encroachment of the waters towards the territories located to the east of the Camposampiero area and confined to the south by the Muson Vecchio embankment. Landslides have also occurred which obstruct traffic in the foothills of Treviso and Belluno.
They remain widespread flooding mainly in the provinces of Vicenza And Padua due to the rainfall yesterday and the day before yesterday. Expected for today full of flood to the plain/mouth sections of Piave, Livenza, Brenta And Bacchiglione. The Bisatto and Fratta-Gorzone will be able to maintain high levels due to the disposal of the water present in the secondary network. Veneto flood, Zaia: “water bombs force us to rethink forecasting models”
“I recommend citizens to stay away from the embankments which are still dangerous. These water bombs, these new phenomena, will force us to review our own forecast models which are already at the forefront, but the important thing is that the system put in place since 2010 with the construction of the rolling basins, all at work, has held up: without the basins we would have had heavy and devastating damage and Vicenza submerged. Today, however, Vicenza is dry, we don’t count any displaced people, nor injured people or worse“: this is what the President of the Region declared Luca Zaia.
In reference to levee breaches, “we count about ten, the last one tonight Camposampiero (Padua), all already dammed except the Musonbut it is nothing compared to the 32 in the past, also considering that in 40 minutes at 4 in the morning there was already a team working to contain the damage,” added Zaia.
There are 10 thousand km of embankments in the Veneto and in recent years a part has been the subject of a particular reinforcement technique called ‘diaphragmation’ which consists of reinforcing them transversally internally with steel piles embedded in concrete. “It is part of the many infrastructure works, 2500 construction sites in the last four years together with the new rolling basins, to make the area safer” explained President Zaia, recalling that “during these hours it is best to stay away from the embankments because they are dangerous as they are soaked in water and may still give way in some places”.
Of the six lamination basins, five are in the province of Vicenza, but only Colombaretta, Orolo and Muson dei Sassi have been filled to 100%. Montebello and Caldogno at 50%, Trissino at 40, and the most recent in via Diaz at 30. The bad weather emergency is not yet officially closed nor definitively over: 2400 calls, 1501 civil protection volunteers in the field from all over the region, 250 firefighters in action and the Alpine Rescue was also alerted for the 15 people isolated in Asolo (Treviso).
