Scripted by Moccia himself together with Luca Biglione, Andrea Cacciavillani And Angelo Bag, Mya – A dream to live was born from a story written by the Neapolitan actress Flora Vonawho also plays the role of the protagonist of the film supported by a rich and inclusive cast Vincent Riotta, Ludovico Fremont, Mirko Frezza, Raffaele Buranelli, Nathalie Rapti Gomez, Maverick Lo Bianco, Alessio Di Domenicantonio, Andrea Garofalo, Elena Presti, Pio Stellaccio, Anna Tangredi and, as a special guest, the singer-songwriter Gianluca Grignani; of which, moreover, some unreleased songs are present in the soundtrack.
Mya is a young Mediterranean beauty who, accompanied by the keyboard player Lucio, performs singing in a pub… but, once the evening is over, she puts on an apron and cleans the tables of the place. For her, in fact, singing is still just a hobby, a dream that she hopes to fulfill by participating in a singing competition where, despite the victory of Blonde, an ethereal singer supported by the charming record manager Mimmo Bonetti, she is noticed by Fulvio, music agent of Serie B who hired her for a small tour. From here begins a period of concerts for her during which she is forced to leave her thirteen-year-old son Carlo with the couple of friends Daniele and Silvia, considering that her father ran away when the pregnancy was announced and she has not had relations with her maternal grandfather for many years. and his always “smoked” brother Davide is involved in the tour as a sound engineer. Furthermore, the road to success is anything but simple, between performances in shabby clubs, addiction to cocaine and alcohol and inevitable sexual advances from those who should help her… as backgrounds linked to the past, sentimental intrigues and drama are intertwined in an exciting story based on musical notes.
Flora Vona declares: “In the embryonic stage of the idea of the subject of Mya my thoughts were turned to Amy Winehouse, an artist who died prematurely at just twenty-seven, an age which sadly marks, apparently, the death of many famous international musicians. Although she had an indisputable, overwhelming and catalyzing talent on her side, Amy Winehouse failed to realize her immense light. This state of mind of hers has always struck me deeply, because many artists experience hardships and disturbances often linked to childhood or life traumas which forcefully spill over into the artistic, emotional and expressive sphere. When I learned of his death I felt immense pain mixed with anger, because I believe that the suffering in our lives must certainly be metabolized and reworked, but, above all, become the engine, the fire from which to draw strength and resilience to obtain the justice that every human being who has hit rock bottom must achieve. This film is not autobiographical, but I wanted to get dirty from an acting point of view and identify with the vicissitudes of the character”.
