Thirty years since the 1994 flood: the commemoration of the municipalities involved

the President of the Province invited the mayors of the main municipalities that were involved in the tragedy to a working table in Cuneo in recent days to plan common initiatives

Thirty years have passed since the devastating flood that hit Southern Piedmont heavily on 5 and 6 November 1994, causing 29 deaths in the Cuneo area alone, 2,226 displaced people and enormous damage. In memory of those broken human lives and to pay homage to that still open wound. In recent days, the President of the Province invited the mayors of the main municipalities that were involved in the tragedy to a working table in Cuneo to plan joint initiatives. In fact, the Province of Cuneo intends to create an operational management aimed at coordinating the many events that the individual Municipalities of Granda are planning. The aim is to facilitate the initiatives that will be implemented by placing them within a single institutional framework.

In addition to the provincial councilor and municipal councilor of Bra, the meeting was also attended by the mayors and representatives of the municipalities of Bastia Mondovì, Cossano Belbo, Farigliano, Monchiero, Ormea, Rocchetta Belbo and Santo Stefano Belbo. The proposal for provincial coordination was welcomed, as was the proposal to propose common awareness-raising initiatives (theatrical shows) traveling across the territory, alongside the proposals that the individual Municipalities are planning for the next few months.

The working table also offered the opportunity to remember personal and collective events linked to the 1994 tragedy, but also to underline the importance of many works to secure the territory carried out in the following years which allowed, together with a new culture of prevention, of containing the damage of other subsequent floods, such as that of 2020.
