The news of the extension of the agreement between private individuals and the Municipality for the “redevelopment” of the San Berillo district, stipulated in 2012, is recent.

The Municipality has in fact extended the deadlines for the implementation of the urbanization works to the private owners of the areas, establishing that the urbanization works (including the multi-storey underground car park in Piazza della Repubblica) must be completed “within five years from the approval of the relevant projects by the municipal administration and their subsequent establishment of the public tender procedure”.

The abandonment of the neighborhood constitutes a still open wound, at the basis of a series of disputes between private individuals (owners of the areas concerned) and the Municipality of Catania, which for decades has not been able to define a redevelopment path and carry out remedial interventions . The absence of a modern PRG (now PUG) and the inaction in determining strategies and concrete paths for the redevelopment of the urban fabric are the real causes of the degradation of the areas.

“We believe that a discussion with the city Senate can no longer be postponed to understand the results of the dialogue with private individuals and the actions that the administration intends to implement to resolve the many critical issues of San Berillo. For this reason we have already formalized a request for an extraordinary and urgent session of the city council” declare the M5s city councilors Graziano Bonaccorsi and Gianina Ciancio.

“San Berillo cannot be a free zone of the city. It is a delicate and complex neighborhood that requires serious responses from the institutions. Raids, raids and sporadic repressive interventions are of no use if we do not have the ability to guarantee services and plan long-term interventions that respect the history and dignity of its inhabitants, improving their quality of life” conclude Bonaccorsi and Ciancio.
