Last April 19th, various realities of social struggles and for the protection of territories, health collectives and student movements met in an assembly to relate their paths of contrast to the government policies of the territories. All this within an international framework characterized by the tendency towards war starting from the genocide of the Palestinian people carried out by the Zionist state of Israel.
The debate made it clear that the different paths of mobilization – the struggles for the right to live, against the steady stream of evictions, evictions, foreclosures and the very cancellation of subsidized public housing (see amendment under discussion to the region of law 12/ 1999 on the house); those concerning the cycle of urban and industrial waste (landfills and incinerators), against “major works” (railway and road links, ports), against the privatization of water and for free, universal and humanised public healthcare; for a school and a university promoting critical knowledge – have common counterparts and a single objective: PUBLIC HEALTH in the most modern meaning of “a state of complete physical, mental and social well-being and not simply the absence of disease”, to be applied not only to individuals but also to the social community, territories and the environment.
Another element that has emerged forcefully is the awareness that to have an impact on the terrible international war scenario it is necessary to start from disputes in the territories, from popular self-organization, from the effects that the war economy already produces in our everyday lives.
Waste systems (incinerators, biodigesters, etc.) instead of separate waste collection, the dismantling of the EPR and its subservience to the interests of developers, the doubling of the Peschiera aqueduct that serves Rome instead of making the existing one more efficient ( between 40 and 60% losses), the accentuation of the privatization processes of healthcare rather than investing in hiring and public facilities…. These are policies for which all levels of local government are responsible (from the Municipality to the Government) and in compliance with the wishes of the large capitalist groups (from ACEA to the Angelucci group, from Caltagirone to the SUEZ group).
For this reason it is necessary to converge in the mobilization paths of the various disputes in a path of which the demonstration on May 16th in the Lazio Region is only a stage and not an end.
Government, Metropolitan Area and Municipality of Rome, multi-utilities, pharmaceutical and health industry, building developers, polluters and waste incinerators are other stages of this journey for which we will have to prepare. A complex but unavoidable task!
The set of these disputes against the “devastation and plunder” of capital, the spread of poverty, healthcare denied to millions of people, the accentuation of labor exploitation which feeds on precariousness and produces deaths and sick people, are all evidence of the profound crisis of the capitalist West.
But if war, human exploitation and the plundering of nature are the only response that declining Western capital can propose, from the Palestinian Resistance – despite the genocidal attempt of the Zionist state – a message of unparalleled power reaches us. From this symbol of the anti-colonial, anti-imperialist and anti-racist struggle, which is mobilizing millions of people all over the world, we receive an incessant call to undertake paths of liberation – from colonialism, patriarchy, human and environmental exploitation – which represent the only hope for humanity.
Social and housing movements, collectives and coordinations against environmental harmfulness, realities for health and public health, all together WE SIEGE THE GOVERNMENT OF THE LAZIO REGION, sharing in the devastation of the territories and their subjugation to profit.
