29-year-old Nigerian arrested for fires in the centre, buildings also at risk

The Carabinieri of the Centro company arrested a 29-year-old Nigerian without fixed abode and irregular on Italian territory, already known to the police. The man is considered a serious suspect in a series of fires set in the Chiaia and San Ferdinando neighborhoods of Naples.

On the night between 7 and 8 May, the 29-year-old allegedly set fire to two restaurant umbrellas between via Verdi and via Santa Brigida, two motorbikes parked in the street and attempted to set fire to the outdoor areas of some premises. The flames licked nearby buildings, also threatening the buildings, before being put out by firefighters.

Investigation and arrest

Thanks to the complaints from traders and the investigative activity of the Carabinieri, the 29-year-old was identified in the Galleria Umberto I and arrested. He is now in prison awaiting his validation hearing.

The fires set by the 29-year-old put not only commercial activities at risk but also public safety, with the flames threatening nearby buildings. The timely intervention of the firefighters prevented further damage.
