“The celebration of International Nurses Day on Sunday 12 May must not remain an isolated episode of the institutional event. The value of the work of these healthcare workers is certified by the long journey that unfolds through history. Being a nurse has always meant placing oneself at the service of others, of the community. With its wealth of knowledge and generosity which are distinctive traits” declares Gianluca Giuliano, national secretary of UGL Salute. “For this reason, just before the day that celebrates its absolute value, we turn to the institutions asking for a further effort to give strength to their mission. For them, as for all healthcare professionals, we ask for emoluments that are in line with other European nations. Everything must be done to make a profession from which young people are starting to flee attractive again. A fundamental theme, approaching International Nurses Day, concerns safety. Physical and verbal attacks are now the order of the day. Caring for others cannot become a risk to one’s own safety. We must do our utmost, without any hesitation, so that this noble work is protected in every way” concludes Giuliano
