The seismographs record an earthquake in Ottana La Nuova Sardegna

Sassari On the real-time earthquake map of the National Institute of Geophysics a small circle appears in the center of Sardinia, dated 3 May 2024. By clicking on it you discover that what was recorded as a 1.3 magnitude shock is actually an explosion in a quarry . The seismic event was recorded at 9.55 this morning by seven seismographs. The quake occurred 10 kilometers deep.

Here are all the earthquakes that have occurred in Sardinia

From 2000 to today, the seismographs of the National Institute of Geophysics have recorded just under 100 seismic “events” in Sardinia off its coast. In 39 cases it involved explosions in quarries (8 in Ottana, 16 in Escalaplano, then one or two in Sarule, Perdasdefogu, Orroli, Tortolì, Loculi, Samassi, Oniferi), in 3 cases it involved explosions (Gergei, Escalaplano and then off the coast of Oristano). The rest of the events, 54, are recorded as earthquakes: 38 at sea, the others all had a magnitude lower than 2.0 degrees and in some cases occurred in the same places where the quarry explosions occur. The strongest tremors that have been felt in Sardinia in recent years all occurred at sea, between 34 and 44 kilometers off the coast of Tavolara, and 7 kilometers from Santa Matgherita di Pula. In particular, the strongest, with a magnitude of 4.7, occurred at 1.37 pm on 26 April 2000 off the coast of Tavolara, while the one in southern Sardinia occurred on 24 March 2006, with a magnitude of 4.1. The other two strong tremors off the coast of Tavolara were recorded by seismographs on 18 December 2004, with a magnitude of 4.2 and then, again on 26 April 2000, at 1.28 pm a 4.2 degree tremor.
