TARANTO – The only way to avoid the death of Alessandro Morricella, a 35-year-old Ilva worker hit by a blaze on 8 June 2015 and who died a few days later from his injuries, «would have been to prevent the pourer from being in the direction of the hole casting in order to take the temperature”. This is what judge Federica Furio wrote in the reasons for the sentence with which on February 29th she established three convictions and three acquittals. In the verdict, the magistrate sentenced Ruggiero Cola, former director of the factory, to 6 years in prison, 5 years to managers Vito Vitale and Salvatore Rizzo for cooperation in manslaughter, and compensation to the civil parties Cgil Taranto, Fiom CGIL and Anmil, established through the lawyers Claudio Petrone, Massimiliano del Vecchio and Mariella Tritto. In the same sentence, which largely accepted the requests of the public prosecutor Francesco Ciardo, Massimo Rosini, general director of the former Ilva under extraordinary administration at the time of the events, Morricella’s shift manager, Saverio Campidoglio, and the casting field technician Domenico Catucci.
