Meeting: “Camille Claudel sculptor and Rodin’s muse”

Monday 6 May, at 4.30pmin the conference room of the Cremonese Philodrammatic Societyas part of the cultural activity ofUniversity of the Third Age and Free Time “Luigi Grande” APS the teacher Laura Trevisani will talk about “Camille Claudel, sculptor and Rodin’s muse”.

Camille Claudel she was the greatest sculptor that France has generated, however during her lifetime she did not achieve great recognition. Opposed by a part of her family, she was remembered by her contemporaries only in terms of Rodin: first as her pupil, then as her lover and finally as her muse.

Actually Camille she was ahead of her time: with a strong and determined temperament, she wanted to be independent, live from her work and be appreciated for her talent. However, in the French society of the second half of the 19th century, still strongly chauvinist and full of preconceptions towards women, in a closed and retrograde environment the young woman could not find her own path. Isolated and abandoned by everyone, she met a tragic end, plotted by her mother and her brother, the poet Paul Claudel.

In her speech the speaker will try to give her voice and dignity back, to bring out her talents, her humanity and above all her true face.

France also became aware, albeit belatedly, of the injustice perpetrated against this great artist and tried to make amends by dedicating a room to her Rodin Museuma museum in Nogent-sur-Seinea commemorative plaque where his atelier stood in rue de Varenneses and a funerary monument.
