The Palestinian Islamist movement Hamas will respond within hours to the latest Egyptian proposal to reach a truce with Israel. This was stated by an official of the Palestinian group that controls the Gaza Strip to the Arab media. Meanwhile, Egyptian sources tell the broadcaster “Al Qahera News” that the efforts to reach an agreement “continue in a positive climate”, after yesterday the Israeli TV “Channel 12” reported that Yahya Sinwar, leader of Hamas in Gaza, considers the proposed agreement for a truce as “a trap”. According to Sinwar, “the proposal on the table is not an Egyptian proposal, but an Israeli proposal in disguise.”
More optimistic, however, is the representative of Hamas in Algeria, Yousef Hamdan, according to whom the latest Israeli offer for a ceasefire in Gaza and the exchange of Israeli hostages with Palestinian prisoners would be close to the position and conditions of the movement , but would still include “clauses that could derail the agreement once implemented.” According to what “Agenzia Nova” learned from a Palestinian source in Cairo, the draft agreement provides for a gradual Israeli withdrawal from all of Gaza, the return of displaced people and the release of 20-30 Israeli hostages, but does not include the expression “cease fire”. The same source adds that Egypt included in the agreement the discussion on a ceasefire during the second phase of the truce, while Hamas asked for guarantees on the start of negotiations to stop the war.
