A silent and moving square. Over 200 kids gathered to celebrate their friend who is no longer with us. They met on Sunday evening to wait for midnight together and wish him “all the way up there”. Filippo Coccithe boy who would have turned 20 on Monday.

But Filippo was never able to celebrate that birthday because last Friday he died after undergoing stomach reduction surgery in a clinic in Arezzo.

Filippo, a 20-year-old from Balduina, undergoes surgery to lose weight: he dies after eight days from gastric bypass

THE TOAST

Gripped in pain, with broken faces and shining eyes, Filippo’s friends met in Piazzale Socrate. In that neighborhood square where the young man lived with his parents, who, destroyed by grief, preferred to remain silent. His friends, however, decided to greet him in their own way. Everyone stood, dressed in dark clothes, waiting for midnight with their eyes turned to the sky in the square which was filled with balloons on Sunday night. Dozens and dozens of white, light blue and blue balloons hanging along the railing of the square together with a large banner reading “Happy birthday up there Filippo”. A message from everyone, because on Sunday everyone was really there: old friends, classmates, football fans. Each closed in their pain, they spent several hours in silence and then toasted at the stroke of midnight. A toast without the birthday boy.

Sunday was a birthday that none of them would have ever imagined spending like this. Because those who knew Filippo still don’t understand how it could have happened. Of how it was possible that their friend died one step away from his dream: to lose those extra pounds that no longer made him feel good. A dream that his parents had decided to fulfill, accompanying him to Arezzo, to the clinic specialized precisely for operations of that type. The young man’s sudden death left everyone stunned. Not only lifelong friends, but also those in football who wanted to remember Filippo on social media by publishing a post on the profile of Atletico Roma Nord. A series of images and videos, which follow one another accompanied by the song “Ovunque ordini” by Irama, and underneath a sentence: «Today we say goodbye to a friend and a brother. We did it the way he would have liked. This victory is all yours.” Filippo, they write again, “he was a boy from the team group, always present at Atletico matches.” And this is why the boys of Atletico Roma Nord dedicated their victory against La Salle 2-1 to him. A victory celebrated with tears and everyone wearing a shirt with the words “Ciao Coi” written on it, that’s what they called him.

ANGER

They are devastated, but at the same time angry and this is why on social media they are asking for justice to be done, for the person responsible for the boy’s death to be found. The person responsible will only be identified thanks to the investigations, which began after a complaint presented to the police by the young man’s father. The case was immediately opened for manslaughter. Now the autopsy examination – scheduled for Friday and in which, in addition to the coroner, a surgeon will also take part – will have to clarify whether there was incompetence, imprudence or negligence on the part of whoever operated on the boy. “He was fine, we did everything as per protocol,” explained yesterday the head of the Tuscan Surgical Center Stefano Tenti, the Arezzo clinic where the young man had been operated on. «Given his high weight – he added – they had also given him a higher dose of heparin to protect him from possible pulmonary embolism by prescribing everything that was necessary to do. From an examination of the files everything appears to be in order.” However, we need to understand why the young man, after feeling ill, arrived at Gemelli in desperate conditions. The doctors tried in every way to save him, even trying to give him several transfusions, but there was nothing they could do. Once the body has been released, the funeral will be held which will most likely be on Monday.
