Iraqi Prime Minister: “Gas production in West Qurna will begin within six months”

Gas production at the West Qurna field in Iraq will begin within the next six months. This was announced by the Iraqi Prime Minister, Mohammad Shia al Sudaniwhich formed a task force of four ministries to review the country’s energy dossier.

The announcement came during a meeting chaired by Al Sudani to discuss the plans of the Ministry of Electricity and the national energy strategy dossier. The Iraqi prime minister ordered the formation of a task force made up of the ministries of Planning, Electricity, Oil and Finance to work on an urgent update of the integrated national energy strategy, “based on a review of the energy dossier” and the energy needs of the country, “while ensuring sustainable financing of energy projects to prevent them from being delayed or interrupted”. Al Sudani underlined “the need to take into consideration the integration of energy projects when updating the strategy”.

The strategy, continued the prime minister, should take into consideration “the path that the state should take to reduce the burden of the energy dossier on state funds”. The meeting particularly covered the decision-making process relating to pipelines for transporting gas produced by service stations, especially since gas production will begin in West Qurna within six months, “which requires an effort to introduce this pipeline into the national gas network gas transport”, as Al Sudani explained.
