Telepass, UnipolMove or MooneyGo, which is better: prices compared

Telepass, Unipol Move and MooneyGo are the three electronic toll devices available to Italian motorists. What are the pricing plans of the three companies.

In recent days Telepass has announced that it will adjust the prices of the basic rent, which will double from next July 1st. The new Telepass CEO explained the reason for the increase, which is also the result of a greater number of services offered. Furthermore, the company aims to offer further mobility services at a time when there are also new operators on the electronic toll market, such as MooneyGo And UnipolMove. Is it an advantage for users to have three different operators? Is there an advantage in the offer too? To find out you need to compare the prices, and also understand how to activate the various services.

The new Telepass tariff plans: the basic and plus offers

From next July 1st the basic Telepass fee will go from 1.83 euros per month to 3.90. The increase is 113%. More than double. Telepass Family users have the possibility to withdraw by June 30th, doing so will be simple: either you opt for the online procedure, or you do it over the phone or in one of the assistance points in the area.

The increases are produced by ‘a new positioning on the consumer market’ which in the company’s objectives should give Telepass the possibility of becoming ‘the main integrated mobility operator’, with the intention of offering a complete and digital service in payment systems related to mobility.

The Telepass fee increases to 3.90 per month but with more services: the new tariffs and subscriptions

With this in mind, promotions have also been created reserved for customers who subscribe to the Telepass Plus service by 2 May 2024 and who will be able to contract on over 25 payment services (including ski passes, public transport, trains) compared to the 6 offered by the basic Telepass plan. Furthermore, it will be possible to associate two plates with each device, but not two devices with the same plate.

There is also news for the Pay per use offer, which will change and go from the cost of 2.50 euros per month to 1 euro per day. In this case, however, only one panel can be associated for each device. Telepass offers in detail:

Pay per use: 1 euro per day. Electronic toll and 5 additional services: Area C Milan, Strait of Messina ferry, affiliated car parks, blue lines, electronic vignettes;
Basic. 3.90 euros per month. Electronic toll and 5 additional services: Area C Milan, Strait of Messina ferry, affiliated car parks, blue lines, electronic vignettes;
Plus. 3.90 euros per month (until December 2025). Electronic toll and over 25 additional services: in addition to those provided by the Basic plan, also fuel, electric charging, ski passes, public transport;
Young (not yet active). No subscriptions or daily charges. Over 10 services, excluding electronic tolls: public transport, shared mobility, trains, flights, coaches.

The alternatives to Telepass: UnipolMove and MooneyGo

The system of so-called ‘drive through’ payments it was liberalized by a European Union directive which introduced the interoperability of toll systems at a European level. In Italy there are therefore three operators at the moment. In addition to Telepass, UnipolMove and MooneyGo are present on the market, which offer private customers the possibility of paying the toll with a device on all Italian motorways, at cross-border toll booths and at affiliated car parks, as well as for Area C in Milan and the ticket for the ferry on the Strait of Messina.

Furthermore, through the apps developed by UnipolMove and MooneyGo, subscribed users have the opportunity to pay for many other mobility-related services such as sharing/rental services, taxis, bills, PagoPA, coupons, tax, public transport. By analyzing in detail the costs of the various electronic toll operators, which one is the most convenient?

The new operators (UnipolMove and MooneyGo) offer a lower price in the monthly fee for the electronic toll service compared to Telepass. The UnipolMove Pay per Use service costs half that of the Telepass service. While MooneyGo is the only one of the three companies to offer the Pay per use service with a monthly fee.

The differences between Telepass, MooneyGo and Unipolmove, which one is best

UnipolMove, electronic toll device created and managed by Unipol, has a subscription cost of 1.50 euros per month, but it has no activation or delivery costs. While in the ‘Pay per use’ formula the cost is 50 cents for each day of use, in addition to 10 euros for activation and delivery costs. In this case, however, each device can only be associated with one license plate.

MooneyGosubsidiary of Enel and Intesa Sanpaolo, offers an electronic toll service base at a lower price than Telepass, but identical to UnipolMove. The cost of the monthly subscription is 1.50 euros, to which an activation cost of 5 euros must be added. There is also the possibility of creating the ‘Pay per use’ formula, i.e. you pay only in the months in which you use the service. In this case the cost is 2.20 euros for the whole month, furthermore there is an activation cost of 10 euros. Two license plates can be associated with this device.
