Liguria, safety at work, Christmas (Pd): “No more excuses, the Region activates every prevention action”

“The numbers of the annual supervisory report of the Labor Inspectorate and the data on accidents and deaths at work highlighted by the trade unions offer a dramatic picture which requires immediate and concrete actions on the part of the institutions. In Liguria on average one worker dies every 16 days, that every 24 hours 48 accident reports are recorded and the irregularity rate recorded by the INAIL annual supervisory report is 75.4 percent (out of 1479 inspections), with three inspections out of four recording infringements, it no longer admits excuses and justifications.” As Davide Natale, regional secretary of the Democratic Partyin the imminence of Labor Day which is celebrated on May 1st.

“The Region has direct competences – through the Psal (Prevention and Security Services) – and the political responsibility to ask the government to implement the staff. The 72 Psal hirings heralded by Toti for 2023 have already been denied by Gratarola, after the response to our question in the regional council a few months ago: in 2023 no hiring, in 2024 an unlimited number of few units will be hired who risk not even being able to cover the turnover, leaving the situation unchanged if not worsened prevention activities, despite the commitment of the staff, who, however, being insufficient in number, are unable to cover all needs”.

“I would have expected from Councilor Sartori – he continues – that, before stating that in our Region there are more widespread controls, he would have read the overall INAIL report and compared our reality to regions with similar demographics. In Umbria, for example, despite a population that is approximately half that of Liguria, approximately the same checks were carried out, 1,739 inspections, but in that region the irregularities detected are equal to 63.4 percent has a lower overall population than Liguria, 1372 checks were carried out with an irregularity of 64.7. In summary, the picture that emerged for Liguria is an alarming one, not to be underestimated and not to be dismissed with extemporaneous and superficial statements Our percentage is also ten points higher than Emilia, Piedmont and Lombardy. To reverse this trend it is necessary to continue to increase the inspection staff of the Ministry of Labor – whose last competition dates back to the previous government – and an extraordinary commitment from the regional offices”.

“With a question – concludes Natale – I will ask the Council to have a report of the inspection activities falling under regional jurisdiction and carried out in 2023 and 2022, to verify how many interventions, actions and hirings have been implemented by the Region to limit injuries and accidents and guarantee safety in the workplace. If we want to impose a real change of pace, we need to activate prevention policies, a word that has disappeared from the vocabulary of this centre-right government of the region and of the country”.
