“One more accident at work involved the DEU operators 118 of Basilicata. After the attack on a nurse that occurred a few days ago, this time it was a road accident that occurred late on Tuesday evening. A violent impact involved an ambulance from the 118 service and a car.”

This was stated by the Deputy Regional Secretary UILFPL Basilicata, Raffaele Pisani.

The medical vehicle, which left from the territorial rescue station of Brienza, was reaching the emergency room of the “San Carlo” hospital in Potenza under code red with a patient on board in serious condition. During the journey, right at the entrance to the city of Potenza, for reasons still under investigation, the accident occurred collision between the ambulance and the car. “The latter – says UILFPL – according to an initial reconstruction of the incident, it appears she was making an unauthorized turn and collided with the ambulance.”

In the violent impact they were mainly bruised and the doctor and the driver of the car were injured, both transported, with another ambulance that arrived on site, to the “San Carlo” hospital for checks. The driver of the 118, who was unharmed, avoided the worst thanks to his promptness. The nurse on board the ambulance involved in the accident was also uninjured.

“The UILFPL – underlines Pisani – intends to point out that the 118 staff carries out a very delicate and risky job, since they must reach patients in need of care as quickly as possible and in disparate contexts. However, despite the measures taken to guarantee safety, unfortunately, as can be seen, even serious accidents can occur and above all with an increasing trend in recent years. It cannot be postponed introduce fair legal recognition and remuneration at Regional and Company level. The main causes of accidents involving emergency vehicles were distraction and failure to respect signs by other road users.”

“Who works on the street – he concludes – even if they do the same job as those who do it in a hospital facility, they cannot fail to receive greater recognition. The assaults, accidents and occupational diseases involving 118 personnel are decidedly greater than in other working contexts”.
