The Valplatani Hen becomes a breed. On 23 April, official recognition was decreed by the Ministry of Agricultural Policies and it was included in the herd book of native poultry breeds. Satisfaction of the TRS (Sicilian Breeds Protection) breeders’ association which safeguarded the pure subjects and carried out the recovery. A long journey undertaken in 2003, when these chickens were mentioned for the first time in a forum by the breeder Salvo Amico. A process of selection, custody and dissemination begins following national lines for the protection of native breeds. Thanks to the University of Catania it was possible to characterize the animals and identify them genetically. The journey has been long and full of obstacles, there has been no shortage of unpleasant episodes of unscrupulous breeders spreading crossbreeding and false news. “Today is a day of celebration” comments the president and breeder Giovanni Cirasa. A new native Sicilian breed is an added value in the Sicilian cultural heritage. Sicilian biodiversity is also recognized at a national level, the official nature of the breed brings added value to the entire island. The Gallina Valplatani is a rustic chicken with an aptitude for egg production. The light color allows it to live outdoors even under the hot Sicilian summer days. In short, it is a breed that adapts well to the territory. Valplatani is a territory that starts from the mouth of the Platani river (ancient Alicos) and reaches the source of the Sican mountains, comprising an arid and almost desert area. The association has selected working animals, animals that can help man overcome even the most terrible periods of drought. In addition to obtaining food themselves, they are bred freelands, always selecting stronger subjects. Satisfaction of all the members who are now waiting for the recognition of the Cornuta di Caltanissetta, a work that gives credit to all the breeders.
