Emergency fires, drones and new tankers to fight fires: the Capitol’s plan

Five new land vehicles to fight fires, including a tanker with autonomous flame extinguishing capability. And then 45 drones to monitor the city from above, usable in rotation for a minimum number of 6-7 vehicles in flight every day. This is the response against the summer fires put in place by the civil protection of Rome, which yesterday presented its new fleet of “tank trucks” in the presence of the mayor Roberto Gualtieri. As regards land vehicles, the improvement is evident. Civil protection goes from just one tanker to six. One of these vehicles, called ‘Graelion’, has a flow capacity of 3,000 liters of water and is equipped with two independent cannons, assisted by control cameras and manageable with two separate joysticks from the driving cab. Then there are four new pick-ups with a carrying capacity of 400 litres. «Naturally – explained the director of the Civil Protection of Rome, Giuseppe Napolitano – our task is to support the firefighters. They are the ones who have the primary task of putting out fires. We can help them by bringing them water from our barrels and trying to contribute actively ourselves to putting out the flames.” If this is the response on the ground, it is also important to remember the surveillance capacity from above. Last year the system was tested with drones by some volunteers. This year that experience will be repeated in a more structured way, also thanks to the regulatory assimilation of these drones to state flights. 45 pilots and 45 drones available between June 15th and October 1st. Among their tasks, they include discouraging arsonists and spotting columns of smoke, encouraging the quicker arrival of firefighting equipment on the ground. «Already last year – commented Gualtieri – we had a 38% reduction in fires compared to 2022. Today we are strengthening our ability to intervene.”
