A “medium mountain stage suitable for escapes” as cycling enthusiasts would say, looking at the rough road taken by a 58-year-old of Tunisian origins.
And it was really an escape because the man pushing the pedals, although assisted by electricity, stole the two wheels shortly before. And behind him are the carabinieri.
The start along the state road 165 which from Sorrento passes through Meta, up to Castellammare di Stabia.
The 58-year-old is riding a bicycle that isn’t his and is speeding along the asphalt to get away. The owner only found the chain attached to a pole and dialed 112.
Many patrols were already on the streets, thanks to the daily territorial control plan put in place by the Sorrento company.
The cyclist is hooked right on the 165. He knows it is a desperate escape but he tries his last effort on the Punta Scutolo climb, steep and tough even for those with the power of lithium batteries.
The police are following him, fearing that a sudden maneuver could seriously injure the 58-year-old so they wait for the road to become less dangerous.
The man goes down towards Vico. Other patrols are already positioned. The choice to get on the Seiano Circumvesuviana train turns out not to be a good one. The police intercept him but the arrest still proves complicated. The 58-year-old resists the handcuffs and defends himself. He hits a soldier in the knee then stops fighting, probably tired from that failed time trial.
He was arrested for improper robbery, resistance and violence against a public official. He is now under house arrest, awaiting trial. The bike is back in the owner’s hands
