The NIA of the Fire Brigade turns 20

A conference described the experiences, research and technological tools at the service of the Fire Investigation Unit

Twenty years of the NIA, the Fire Investigation Unit of the Fire fighters. For the occasion, the National Fire Brigade organized the conference yesterday, Tuesday 23 April “NIA. Challenge to the Future” which was attended by the Head of Department, Prefect Renato Franceschelli and the Head of the National Corps, Carlo Dall’Oppio.

The role of the NIA
The event allowed us to have a overview of the institutional activities of the Unit such as the investigations and experiments carried out so far, and above all to have an idea of ​​the prospects and future developments in this area linked to an increasingly frequent and concrete use of new technologies. The first session, introduced and moderated by Francesco Notaro, Regional Director of the Fire Brigade of Emilia Romagna, was dedicated to illustrating the role of the NIA in institutional investigations, and saw among the speakers the presence of the Deputy Prosecutor at the Public Prosecutor’s Office of Rome Giovanni Conzo, the Commander of the Carabinieri RIS Colonel Sergio Schiavone, Antonietta Lombardozzi, Senior Technical Director of the State Police and Vincenzo Di Carlo, Director of the Fire Investigation Unit.

Research at the service of investigations
The second session, introduced and moderated by Cristina D’Angelo, Regional Director of the Marche Fire Brigade, was dedicated to study activities, research and experimentation to support the investigation, with interventions by Giuliana Bianco of the University of Basilicata, Paola Russo of the “La Sapienza” University of Rome and Fabrizio Malaspina for the NIA Piedmont. In this session we explored the topic of cross contamination, gas chromatographic analyzes on samples taken from the crime scene and studies on battery fires.

New technologies
The third session, introduced and moderated by Michele Mazzaro, Commander of the Naples Fire Brigade and Massimo Nazareno Bonfatti, Director of the Study and Experience Centre, illustrated the topic relating touse of new technologies in investigation, with interventions by Alessandra Tassa of the European Space Agency – ESA, Marco Pazzi of the University of Turin, Augusto Pedone and Fabrizio Lago for the NIA Sicilia, Rocco Bochicchio for the NIA Basilicata and Alessandro Fiorillo for the NIA Centrale and Stefano Martinelli for the Central Directorate for Emergency, Technical Rescue and Forest Firefighting. In this session we talked about satellite support in investigation activitiesfrom the spectrometry techniques applied to investigation, delluse of canine units in the search for accelerators andapplication of virtual reality in the metaverse in exercises aimed at investigation.
