Despite a decidedly negative first impression on her part after their meeting in 1991, a few years later the two started dating. Elisa Savi and Moni Ovadia met for the first time in 1991 at the home of mutual friends. Her impression, however, was not the best of hers, since when she saw him get out of the dilapidated car full of supermarket bags with papers, empty bottles and sweets inside, he seemed like a rather extravagant character to her. In an interview with I Woman, Elisa Savi also said: «At night he stayed up studying Greek and Russian, went to sleep at dawn and reappeared in mid-afternoon. We met there (at the house of mutual friends, ed) for three summers in a row: to me he just seemed like a butterfly.” In 1994, on the occasion of a new meeting, she was finally struck by Ovadia – who had been interested in the woman from the beginning – and in 1995 they began a relationship, going to live together for two years in Elisa’s small apartment, and then getting married on July 17, 1997.
In 2002, the two decided to start collaborating: Savi began creating costumes for the actor and singer’s showsstarting from Fiddler on the Roof. In the same interview with I Woman, Ovadia praised his wife, explaining: «She is an extraordinary costume designer. She’s as brilliant as she was when she was a stylist: she once designed a line of children’s clothes inspired by Soviet constructivism! She came up with the idea for the skullcaps». In fact, her wife said that in 1996 she started crocheting her husband’s characteristic hats herself.
