an educational union in Friuli Venezia Giulia – Nordest24

The integration between academic and sporting activities offers an overview of the educational and training potential that emerges when academic knowledge meets the dynamism of sport. Recently, the University of Udine and the Italian Sailing Federation (FIV) collaborated on the project “The sciences of sailing”, an initiative that combines theory and practice to explore the STEM disciplines (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics) through the world of sailing.

Practical application of STEM subjects

During the winter months, students from five high schools in Friuli Venezia Giulia participated in theoretical lessons covering a wide range of topics: from mathematics applied to navigation, through sailing physics, to computer science and marine ecology. This interdisciplinary approach has not only enriched the students’ educational offering, but has also highlighted how theory can be effectively applied in practical contexts.

Technical and logistical collaborations for sea trips

The practical outings took place at the Oscar Cosulich Sailing Society of Monfalcone, with the logistical support of the XIII FIV Zone Committee. These hands-on sessions gave students the opportunity to experience firsthand the intersections of mathematics and sailing, understanding how mathematical concepts are critical to safe and effective sailing.

The added value of interdisciplinarity

Lorenzo Freddi, project coordinator and teacher of mathematical analysis, highlights the didactic and pedagogical value of the practical application of mathematics in real situations, such as navigation and the management of emergencies at sea. This type of active learning stimulates students’ interest and opens up new professional perspectives in the field of nautical sciences and beyond.

Contributions and future prospects

Manuel Vlacich, Sports Director of the SVOC, highlights the renewed interest and enthusiasm that the project is generating not only among students, but also among members of the sailing community, many of whom participate as volunteers or instructors. The ambition is to continue to develop and expand this project, consolidating an educational platform that links close links between theory and practice.
