The first ambulance at the Campi stadium arrived 17 minutes after the moment in which aid was started for the footballer Mattia Giani. The sports judge of the FIGC – Tuscan Amateur League reconstructs it, based on the referee’s report of the Lanciotto-Castelfiorentino match suspended on 14 April due to the player’s illness, who later died in hospital. The judge writes that the aid on the occasion was given “by the guest masseur and a doctor present in the stands who intervened with cardiac massage and the defibrillator present in the changing rooms”, and that “after 17 minutes a first ambulance arrived which continued the rescue maneuvers assisted by other volunteers who arrived a few minutes later with another ambulance”, then “the medics did their utmost in resuscitation attempts and then provided for the urgent accompaniment of the footballer to the nearest emergency room”. For the judge, the suspension of the match – stopped at the 14th minute of the first half – was justified also due to the discouragement and inevitable upset of the players and managers, and he established that “the remaining part” to be played should be recovered. Lanciotto was fined 400 euros “for lack of ambulance and/or doctor”, “sanction commensurate with the service omitted, taking into account the incident”.

Meanwhile, the Florence prosecutor’s office will today entrust the task to the coroner for the autopsy: the examination will be carried out by Dr. Beatrice Defraia. The Giani family will appoint its own medical-legal consultant. At the moment there are no suspects in the case for manslaughter. Prosecutor Giuseppe Ledda ordered the acquisition of the defibrillator, medical records and sports medical certificates.

And yesterday Gianluca Mancini dedicated his goal in the Europa League to Mattia Giani. “I dedicate the goal to Mattia Giani and his entire family, who are really suffering. I’ve spent the last few days thinking about them.” Thus Gianluca Mancini, speaking to Rai Sport, after the home victory of “his” Roma against Milan in the Europa League. The success, opened by Mancini’s own goal, earned the Giallorossi a pass to the semi-finals. “On a sporting level, I couldn’t ask for anything better, not so much for the goals, but for Roma’s recent results. In private life, however, it’s not a good moment but we’ll be able to get back up again”, added the Giallorossi defender, a relative of the young and unfortunate player Mattia Giani. “We started very well and then we were able to suffer, as a great team must be able to do. In Milan we played a great match, as did tonight, especially at the start. We are happy to have come through. Leverkusen? They had a fantastic season. It will be a flashback, thinking about last year”, concluded Mancini.
