Fatal accident on the set of Rust: the weapons officer sentenced

Reacting to the deadly incident on the set of Rust, a New Mexico court sentenced gun handler Hannah Gutierrez Reed to 18 months in prison.

Waiting for Alec Baldwin’s fate to be known in the summer who, when questioned about the fatal accident, pleaded not guilty and he denied of having pulled the trigger of the gun, a New Mexico court convicted Hannah Gutierrez Reed, the weapons officer of the Rust set, for manslaughter, inflicting 18 months in prison; Judge Mary Marlowe Sommer rejected the defense’s request for probation.

According to the prosecution, Hannah Gutierrez Reed was directly responsible for the death of Halyna Hutchins, Rust’s director of photography: she repeatedly violated the safety protocol and acted without caution, not carrying out the necessary checks on the prop gun (Baldwin in fact fired a real bullet). After the conviction, the police took Hannah Gutierrez Reed, twenty-six years old, to prison; Jason Bowels, her defense attorney, said to CNN who will appeal.

Assistant director David Halls also testified in the trialwho has already admitted that he was negligent in checking the prop weapon, that he did not examine all the bullets and that he shouted «Cold gun», cold gun, before passing it to Baldwin, and agreed to six months of unsupervised probation, a $500 fine and 24 hours of community service; the court also forced him to take a gun safety course, and banned him from using drugs and alcohol.
