Milan, 11 April. (askanews)-Vietnamese tycoon Truong My Lan was sentenced to death after a gigantic fraud case that occurred in her home country. The woman has been accused of being responsible for what is described as the country’s largest financial fraud case. The jury found her guilty of embezzling $44 billion from Saigon Commercial Bank over a decade. According to the jury, Truong My Lan’s actions undermined “people’s trust in the leadership of the (communist) Party and the state.” The woman was found guilty of corruption, embezzlement and violation of the banking law. The businesswoman denied her role and placed the blame on her subordinates. Truong My Lan is convicted of defrauding approximately 42,000 people between 2012 and 2022, through a bond loan passed through SCB, more than 90% owned by her group, with the complicity of officials responsible for supervising the banking sector. In recent years the communist regime has increased anti-corruption controls, and over 4,400 people, including numerous figures from the business and political world, have been prosecuted. The use of capital punishment is common in Vietnam for drug-related crimes, much less so for other crimes. The exact figures are a state secret, but according to Amnesty International dozens of executions take place every year.
