Green homes directive, the final approval arrives: what will be the energy savings (and bills) for Italy?

Is called “Emission Performance of Buildings Directive”but we all know it as “Green Houses Directive”i.e. the European-level measure that aims to make homes’ energy consumption more efficient, with a lower impact on both bill that a environmental level (less consumptionless use of matter first).

The Ecofin on April 12th (the European Economic and Financial Council) gave the definitive ok to the Green Homes Directive. A measure that seems to follow the intentions of the 110% Superbonus, but which operates in a different way and could give Italian construction considerable growth and jobs that cannot be relocated.

Green Homes: what impact on the environment and bills

How does it work

The Directive Green Houses expects Member States to reduce the energy consumption of residential buildings progressively over the next few years. The text provides that the reduction will be at least:

  • The 16% by 2030
  • The 20-22% by 2035

The prerogative is that at least 55% of this reduction must be obtained, for each country, with the renovation of 43% of the properties with the worst performance.

Who will benefit from it

There is also satisfaction from some associations in the sector. David Panzerihead of Ecco’s European program, commented on today’s vote as follows: “The approval of the Green Houses directive is positive news for the Italian construction, energy efficiency and theirs induced” – he stated on the sidelines of the vote at the European Council, and then explained that the measure “it guarantees the predictability of energy consumption reduction objectives and consequently allows a long-term vision of investment and development opportunities in the sector”.

To benefit from this directive they will be all those who see their house increase by two energy classes compared to the current state, according to the Ecco Climate think tank. Citizens will be able to immediately notice the savings bill. Above all, more than economic savings, it must be said that if you consume less energy you use less of the energy produced, which often still comes from the extraction of fuels fossils.

How much you save on your bill

Once the Green Homes Directiveapartment owners or renters will be able to notice savings at the end of the month on light And gas. This is because the measure includes a series of interventions aimed at making the systems more efficient properties, and therefore consume less energy. Interventions of this type are, for example, the maintenance of windows and doors windows, thermal insulation (coat), home automation etc. According to Ecco Climate, “go up at least by 2 energy classes allows savings of 40% on the billequal to an average annual saving of 1,067 euros at the costs of 2022. Furthermore, a renovated house is worth on average 44.3% more than one to be renovated”.

The environmental impact

Also the environment is affected (positively) by this measure, since a saving on energy consumption also equates to not producing more. Since currently the Green Homes Directive, as emerges from the official text, “the review of EPBD directive will help the EU phase out fossil fuel boilers”.
