Last winter, Switzerland exceeded its voluntary gas savings target. Compared to the average consumption from 2017 to 2022, the Federal Council had set itself a cut of 15%. According to preliminary data from the Federal Office of Energy (SFOE), consumption fell by 23%.

From the beginning of October 2023 to the end of March, the Confederation was expected to save 3,997 gigawatt hours (GWh) of gas, regardless of weather conditions. According to the Swiss Energy DashboardExternal link published on the SFOE online page, 6,102 GWh were saved. As regards the March data, the SFOE specifies that these are only estimates.

In Switzerland, around three-quarters of annual gas consumption is used for heating during the cold months. The voluntary savings target of 15% should therefore be achieved through measures taken by households, in industry, services and administration.
