No government intervention after the explosion in fuel prices. According to the update from the Fuel Observatory of the Ministry of the Environment and Energy Security, in the week from 1 to 7 April, the price of petrol increased to 1.9 euros per liter compared to the previous week while diesel rose to 1,798 euros/litre.

Fuel at record prices: the critical threshold is one step away, then price increases will snowball

The Minister of Economy Giancarlo Giorgetti explained – presenting the Def – that the executive does not currently have any ad hoc intervention planned but that – to lighten the burden on the wallets of Italians – we will rely on the rule on mobile excise duties, inserted in the fuel decree of January 2023, which follows the measure created by Pierluigi Bersani in 2007 and introduced in the 2008 Finance Law. The law provides for a cut in excise duties on diesel and petrol if certain conditions occur. In detail, the excise duty reduction would be triggered when the price of fuel exceeds the average price of the previous two months compared to the reference value, expressed in euros. Excise duties and VAT weigh on petrol for 56.4% of the final price, while those for diesel for 52.4%.
