After today’s developments in the matter concerning Ilaria Salisthe Mayor of Monza Paolo Pilotto – who was the teacher of the 39-year-old teacher at the Liceo Classico B. Zucchi in the city – addresses the Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation Antonio Tajani: “In your activity to protect our fellow citizen, although aware of the interpretative complexity relating to the relationship between the legislation of two different states, I am convinced that it is possible to identify within Italian law, Hungarian law, European law and international law the necessary tools to guarantee the dignity of treatment of the person detained and subjected to trial”, states Pilotto.
In this regard, the Mayor also wanted to recall the text of a Motion approved by the Monza City Council on 1 February 2024, which expressed the sense of a “serious concern that the representatives of the city community had expressed regarding the conditions of detention of Ilaria Salis”. In particular, the City Council’s Motion asked the Government to continue exploring the possibility of requesting the transfer of our fellow citizen to Italy to spend the period of detention there awaiting the end of the trial underway in Hungary.
“A few months ago, when the human and judicial story of our fellow citizen came to light, I had the opportunity to appreciate your choice to initiate contacts with the Hungarian Government – continues Pilotto, addressing the Hon. Tajani – trying to assert legal and ethical principles that refer to the common European tradition and culture”.
“I am certain of your commitment to every citizen residing abroad, in particular those who find themselves in serious need of protection”, concluded Mayor Pilotto.
