Processionary danger at the Rio Torto park in Valmadrera and Malgrate. The eggs hatched following the regular cycle – usually between February and April depending on the weather conditions – and the larvae began to form the traditional “train” along the paths that cut through the busy green area that unites the two municipal areas . The report was made through a video published on the Facebook group “You are from Valmadrera If…”.

The danger of the insect

The pine processionary moth is a moth belonging to the Notodontidae family, widespread in Eurasia and North Africa. It is a highly destructive insect for pine forests as it deprives them of part of the foliage, thus compromising their life cycle. Furthermore, during the larval stage this insect has hair that is particularly stinging for various animals, including humans, and its effects appear after a day. Any contact with the noses of some animals could seriously compromise their breathing, even causing their death.
