What in the past few days belonged to the realm of hypotheses, has now become reality: the anime of Demon Slayer will end with a film trilogy. It was the same man who broke the news Crunchyrollwhich together with Sony Pictures Entertainment will distribute the triptych of films in cinemas globally, with the exception of Japan and some Asian territories.
The announcement, also followed by a breve teaser published yesterday on the platform’s social channels, was definitely in the air, and the choice to definitively transmigrate into the meanders of the big screen appears, from whatever perspective one observes it, the best strategy to conclude the anime serial cycle: both in narrative and purely commercial terms.
After all, the first cinematic foray of the anime based on the manga by Koyoharu Gotōge, namely The Mugen trainshattered every record at the Japanese box office, thus establishing the big screen as the natural destination for a product, such as Demon Slayer, aimed at pushing the horizons of anime beyond the limits of the animated medium, especially from an aesthetic/formal point of view. And in the eyes of Ufotable and its strategic partners, there is no better opportunity than the one that will now be offered by theadaptation of the Infinity Castle arc.
Precisely the final segment of the fourth season of the anime appeared, from this perspective, as an appetizer of the solutions that will mark the film trilogy, of which still no release dates have been announced. If 4×07 had already raised the stakes in itself – so much so that Gyomei’s past appeared to be among the most tragic in the production of Demon Slayer – the eighth episode of the last seasonal cycle has dramatically raised the level of tension, bringing the clash with Muzan – and his demons – to a even more radical dimensionon which the entire film trilogy will be based.
It is no coincidence, in fact, that the trailer (visible at the bottom of the news) is crossed by ahorrifying atmosphereso much so that each individual character will be forced to drown their conflicts in blood, and to find in the scent of death the tool with which to activate their own evolutionary processes. It is precisely here, for example, that the Demon Slayer anime will reveal the truth about Zenitsu and the crises that are afflicting him, ferrying the paths of all the demon slayers into a nefarious and diabolical framework, in which (in)humanity will take over their very lives.
Those who have already read the manga, in fact, know well that Infinity Castle is followed by afurther narrative tail. And although Ufotable has not offered too many clarifications on the matter, it is reasonable to think that the film trilogy will include theentire final segment of the paper counterpartdedicating the spectacular epilogue to the third of the announced feature films. But to be able to formulate more concrete hypotheses, we must wait for the next few months, during which Ufotable and Crunchyroll will update us both on the respective release dates of the individual films, and on the content they will cover.
