BlackMagic Camera Arrives on Pixel and Samsung Galaxy. Other Androids Snubbed

Blackmagic Camera arrived on iPhone last September and has received everyone’s appreciation: no video recording app is as complete as the one proposed by the company which today, in the video field, represents the reference choice in the professional market.

Blackmagic had promised it would also arrive on Android and the app is also available from today on some Android devices, with the same shooting features as the iPhone and with full compatibility with Blackmagic software, such as Resolve, where thanks to the cloud they can sync clips without having to transfer them via cable.

The app, however, will not be available for all Androids: it can only be used on phones with Android 13 or later but above all it is limited to Samsung Galaxy S23, S24 models and Google Pixel 7/8 series.

At the moment BlackMagic did not want to clarify whether it will also arrive on other devices and what the reasons for this choice are, but we believe that they have evaluated the diffusion of phones, especially on the American market, and have made a choice.

As much as it may be annoying not to have such a complete app for video on your phone, perhaps a top of the range one, you have to consider that in the case of the Blackmagic Camera The phone’s hardware plays a key role: not only do you need specific profiles for the sensors but above all the screen rendering must also be calculated, because the app allows you to view a movie with a LUT applied and the visual result must be absolutely consistent with what will then be obtained in the post-production phase.

This work can obviously be done on all smartphones, but the fragmentation in the Android context doesn’t help and it would have been too burdensome for BlackMagic to analyze and calibrate every single top of the range on the market. The app will likely work anyway, but the visual results may not be consistent as well as there may be instability issues.
