‘Space’ food for Earth’s adults

AGI – The goal is to reach new frontiers, flying directly into space. As, in a magical recipe, Italian cuisine, science and technology have come together, reaching not only the unexplored Universe, but also the heads of state, directly in Borgo Egnazia on the occasion of the G7.

There historic Tiberino company from Barisince 1888 specialized in the production of ready-made gourmet dishes of Italian cuisineand the Fasano area REA Space, founded in 2022have brought Puglia into space: the first provides dehydrated gourmet meals for astronauts on the ISS; the second has developed technological suits that simulate gravity on the musculoskeletal system and monitor vital parameters, thus helping astronauts maintain muscle mass and prevent bone deterioration in microgravity.

The Tiberino company, in its fourth generation of business, will offer a gift to the heads of state and government tomorrow an exclusive case containing authentic “space food” made in Bari, the same one that, first, was the protagonist of the Italian menus of the International Space Station for three missions.

These two local companies put their expertise at the service of the international community and have established numerous collaborations with public and private entities such as ASI, ESA, NASA, SpaceX and Axiom Space. Since 2007, thanks to Tiberino, astronauts on the International Space Station have been able to enjoy a menu completely made in Italy, with dehydrated dishes such as coffee, dark chocolate, fregola with peppers and normal couscous, prepared only with natural ingredients.

Last January, the AX-3 space mission – with an all-European crew on board – which left Cape Canaveral brought on board the REA Space high-tech suit, worn by the colonel of the Italian Air Force, Walter Villadei, to whom the Italian Defense has entrusted the “Voluntas” mission. This suit allowed vital and biomechanical data to be collected during tests inside SpaceX’s Crew Dragon headed to the ISS. These successes were possible thanks to the support of Italian institutions such as the Italian Space Agency and the Air Force. Their commitment has strengthened Italy’s prestige in the global aerospace sector, facilitating collaborations between large international companies and innovative companies such as Tiberino and REA Space.
