Is Joanna’s jawline from Perfect Dark too square? A developer shows the model and silences everyone

AtXbox Games Showcase Microsoft finally showed Perfect Dark, proving to fans that the project is very much alive and well. So everyone is happy? Not really, because the game has gone woke by featuring a protagonist with a jaw bigger than that of a ten-year-old.

Of course, you will already understand how seriously we take this type of design criticism by Joanna Dark, but it is interesting to address the question thanks to the comment by Del Walker, Principal Game Artist who worked at Naughty Dog, Rocksteady Games and Respawn Entertainment. In other words, he is an expert in the world of gaming and precisely in working on the graphic component.

Walker’s words on the jaw of the protagonist of Perfect Dark

As we can see in the tweet below, Walker shows us the model that was used as a reference for the creation of Joanna Dark. The developer writes: “Instead of explaining your preference for stylized, childlike features in women, here goes face model for Perfect Dark. No one ‘added a jawline’ – that’s just what real women look like.”

In subsequent tweets, Walker goes on to explain, “It’s not even worth explaining camera perspectives or field of view. It’s clear that he ultimately doesn’t like the look of real adult women.”

Finally he closes the speech by stating: “I don’t disagree with the fact that realism isn’t always good for entertainment products. You can have your say. Not wanting realistic faces is a different topic. I wanted to show that they didn’t ADD a jawline to the face scan model; it’s just how it looks from that angle.”

If jaws don’t scare you, then you can easily (re)watch the Perfect Dark trailer from the Xbox Games Showcase.
