One of the most exciting announcements of the latest Xbox Games Showcase was definitely Doom: The Dark Agesthe new chapter of the adrenaline-pumping first-person shooter saga that seems even more violent and exciting than usual.
After revealing the official gameplay trailer, Xbox and id Software have confirmed that it is not a sequel to Eternalbut of a prequel to the chapter released in 2016 (you can find it included in the Slayers Collectionavailable on Amazon).
Furthermore, an unexpected confirmation also arrived, as it is an Xbox Game Studios production: it is not an Xbox exclusive, but it will also be available on PS5 from launch.
A choice that will obviously make all fans of the saga on PlayStation consoles happy, but why did Xbox decide not to make the new chapter an exclusive?
In an interview given to IGNUS on the occasion of IGN Live, Phil Spencer explains that the decision — at least in part — came thanks to a request from the id Software development teamwho wanted the first-person shooter saga to remain available to all players.
The decision was then immediately approved by Spencer himself, who deemed it the most correct choice to make for the franchise:
«Doom is definitely one of those franchises that has a history on many platforms. It’s a franchise that I think everyone deserves to play.
When I found myself in a meeting with Marty a couple of years ago [Stratton, studio director di id Software, ndr] I asked him what he wanted to do and he said he wanted to sell it on all platforms. It was simple».
It therefore seems that much of the credit for the multiplatform launch of Doom The Dark Ages it was thanks to the development team, which despite their belonging to Xbox Game Studios was not ready to give up one of the key factors of the success of the saga: the release on as many platforms as possible.
Let you play on PS5, Xbox Series X|S or PCall of you will therefore be able to discover the new brutal hellish carnage of the Slayer, even if it is necessary wait until 2025.
