Ilfattoquotidiano.it has been collaborating since 2022 with the student blog “MyFermi” of the Enrico Fermi institute in Mantua. The following is one of the contents created for us by the editorial team, made up of journalists and computer scientists (and their teachers).

by Cataldo Musto

Recently we have been hearing insistently about artificial intelligenceof software and sites that implement it and of more or less advanced versions of these, but we almost never invest time in asking ourselves how to recognize to what extent a content was generated by artificial intelligence or comes, instead, from human creativity. In fact, as is known, artificial intelligence is able to generate texts, images, sounds and videos, using different writing styles, realistic drawing techniques, already existing voices and combine all these in the creation of films (known also as deepfake).

It is therefore even more complicated – as if it wasn’t already complicated enough – for the inexperienced user to navigate the IT world. Fortunately, various online tools (called detector), thanks to which it will not be necessary to download anything on your computer and smartphone and can be useful for this purpose. Furthermore, for daily uses, these tools they all are free. Let’s see some for each category:

TEXT DETECTOR

  • noplagio.it
Among the most authoritative in the sector, this site contains multiple features, including that of detector of texts generated via AI. “The detector uses machine learning, natural language processing, web development tools and cloud services to ensure accurate control and reliable detection of AI-generated content.”
  • neuralwriter.com
This tool is designed to recognize texts generated by any more than AI 30 languagescan recognize effectively essaysarticles by news or simple texts. Furthermore, it provides insights into the writer’s style and patterns, improving his detection capabilities. The tool is completely free: just paste the text that may have been generated by AI and observe the verification results.

IMAGE DETECTOR

  • wasitai.com
Literally “It was that AI”, this site can get you pumped up an image in any format and of any size and indicate the probability with which it can be generated by artificial intelligence.
  • aiornot.com
It has almost the same features as the previous site, but requires registration. It can be a valid alternative for an additional opinion.

AUDIO DETECTOR

  • resemble.ai
Among the most famous and authoritative sites for generating audio, it now also integrates a free and reliable tool for recognition with a reliability of over 90%.
  • aiornot.com
The same image recognition site comes back into play as it also integrates the audio recognition function with good precision.

VIDEO DETECTOR

By using some of these tools, you will surely have realized that rarely the percentage of reliability reaches 100%. As he states Angelo Greco in an article entitled “How to find out if a text is generated by artificial intelligence”, published on the “La legge per tutti” website, “there are various tools and software capable of analyzing texts and providing information on the chance that were generated by AI […]. However, they do not provide a certain and safe key to discover the lack of originality of the text. Moreover, if the author was so careful as to modify the returned text by Chat GPT, Gemini or other AI, the response of these tools could be altered”. For research techniques, I refer you to his article.

Obviously they algorithms at the base of the detectors improve daily also thanks to the process of machine learning, but they are not yet able to be considered perfect in their task. In case of doubt, it is always necessary to carry out further research, inquire about the authoritativeness of the author and consult further sources. As always, our first weapon against fake news and bad information is always our greatest gift, that is, our conscience, our intellect and above all our critical spirit.
