In 2021, there were 706,969 deaths in Italy, almost 40 thousand fewer than in 2020, but around 110 thousand more if we consider the average of the years 2018 and 2019. This was announced by Istat, according to which the excess compared to 2018-2019 it is mainly explained by mortality from Covid-19. In fact, after the generalized increases in 2020, mortality from the main causes is reduced in 2021, with the exception of external causes (+5% compared to 2020). However, mortality from diabetes and some circulatory diseases remains higher than pre-pandemic levels. Total and Covid-19 mortality is reduced compared to 2020 in the North, especially in the North-West, while it increases in other areas, particularly in the South and on the Islands. In 2021, after the increase in 2020, the number of deaths occurring in residential facilities returns to pre-pandemic values, where deaths from Covid-19 are significantly decreasing. In detail, according to what the National Institute of Statistics reports, in 2021 there were almost 64 thousand deaths from Covid, equal to -19% compared to 2020 and 9% of the total, while there was an 8% reduction in the rate of total mortality among those over 80 compared to 2020. Finally, the increase in total mortality among those under 50 compared to the previous year was equal to 4%, with a +19% mortality from Covid.
