Despite still being a relatively young medium, the the videogame sector is starting to be dotted with remakes which attempt to give new luster to old glories of the past. We have many illustrious examples of projects that have achieved this goal, but in some cases things didn’t go quite as planned.
Warcraft III Reforged
Even years after its release, Reforged is still perceived as a step back from the original Warcraft III. The main problem noted by fans lies not only in what is missing, but also in what has been compromised: the new graphics, although technically more advanced, have lost visual clarity and readability during battles, an aspect that should definitely not be underestimated when talking about competitive RTSs.
Many initial promises, including reworked cutscenes and a campaign more faithful to Warcraft’s modern narrative background, were toned down or abandoned entirely in the final release. To crown it all, it should be remembered that Warcraft III: Reforged has effectively replaced the original experience: the community had to abandon a game they loved to make room for a title that few appreciated.
Pokémon Shining Diamond and Shining Pearl
These neat remakes of the Nintendo series are often criticized because they are faithful to the originals, but in the wrong way. The titles are in fact limited to replicating almost identical structure and content, while also maintaining the design defects of 2006. chibi graphic styleFurthermore, it strongly divided fans, resulting for many less convincing than the original pixel art and not particularly expressive from a technical and artistic point of view.
To this, we add a poor integration of the improvements introduced in the Pokémon games of the time, which made theless fluid experience than other episodes and contemporary gaming standards.
Resident Evil 3 Remake
While still a valid experience in itself, and while it deepened the narrative side of the experience, the remake of Resident Evil 3: Nemesis is often considered inferior because it drastically reduces what made the original unique. Most of the iconic areas of Raccoon City (first and foremost the Clock Tower) have been cut or simplified, and the more open and replayable structure of the 1999 game has been replaced by amuch more linear and short adventure. Nemesis himself, who in the original was a constant and unpredictable presence, is here relegated to scripted sequences, losing much of his psychological impact on the player.
Il direct comparison with Resident Evil 2 Remakereleased shortly before and decidedly more complete in content and ambitious in overall quality, was inevitable. Fortunately, Capcom has changed pace again with Resident Evil 4, a remake that has brought the quality standard back to the level that the series deserves (here is our Review of Resident Evil 4 Remake).
