I’m sure that all of us gamers, at least once in our lives, have been burned by a game that we were awaiting with great impatience and curiosity, only to be left with a strong bitter taste in our mouths once we discovered that that work didn’t live up to expectations at all. And down with disappointment and sadness.
In my case it happened a few times, but some cases burned me more than others. I’ll quote you below 3 games that I was aiming for a lot and instead they deeply disappointed me:
Castlevania Lords of Shadow 2
I still remember the 2012 reveal trailer, a concentration of atmosphere, epic nature and involvement that immediately caused Castlevania Lords of Shadow 2 at the top of my most anticipated games. After all, as a great lover of the original Castlevania Lords of ShadowI couldn’t wait to find out how the story would continue Gabriel Belmont.
And instead, two years later, I found myself in my hands a product that is only the mere shadow of its predecessor, uninspired on a playful, scenic and conceptual level, and ruined by some absolutely crazy ideas (those uncommentable stealth phases still cry out for revenge). Castlevania Lords of Shadow 2 may have been the tombstone for the franchise, considering that there have been no new unreleased games since then and Konami it simply limited itself to re-proposing Collection of old adventures.
Final Fantasy XIII
In a similar way to Castlevania Lords of Shadow 2, too Final Fantasy XIII had bewitched me with every trailer, from the first shown in 2006 to all the subsequent ones seen until 2010, the year in which the work Square Enix it then became reality.
Once available I immediately ran to the store to get it and play with it straight away, and the wonderful intro promised great things. It goes without saying that all the enthusiasm harbored for years was then shattered in the face of harsh reality: Final Fantasy XIII is one of the worst exponents of its historic brand, very flat in terms of story, characters and gameplay and tedious in the long term, practically never managing to excite. If nothing else aesthetically and as a soundtrack it was excellent, but these two factors did not save it from the abyss and from my enormous disappointment.
Mass Effect Andromeda
The original trilogy of Mass Effect was probably my favorite series of the time PS3/Xbox 360: the galactic odyssey of Comandante Shepard and his companions gave me unforgettable emotions and absolute involvement throughout all three games, and I think there have been very few games that have fascinated me so strongly. Clearly the announcement of the next one Mass Effect Andromeda could only arouse my attention: a new galaxy, new heroes, a new story and renewed gameplay.
These factors combined worried me a little but at the same time led me to await the work with some anxiety BioWare in the hope of being surprised just like in the past. Unfortunately none of this happened. Mass Effect Andromedia is a very distant relative of the original trilogy, ruined by an open world structure that favors the repetitive accumulation of quality content and with very few noteworthy missions, while the story and characters were incapable of conveying even a modicum of the emotions of the first three games. It goes without saying that at the moment I don’t have any particular hope for the next Mass Effect currently in development, but who knows how many more years away.
