Also this year the journalists of the Marca have “swept the board” at the Italian Absolute Championships for journalists held last week in the splendid setting of the TC Diamante in Calabria. Alessandro Baschieri (Corriere del Veneto) and Bratislav Bata Janjic (freelance) won three gold medals while Fabio Poloni (La Tribuna di Treviso) won two bronze medals. Alessandro Baschieri in the over 50 final met the Sicilian Mimmo Patti (Giornale di Sicilia). After the first balanced set (7/5), in the second Patti was unable to find the right solutions to counter Baschieri’s attacks (6/2). With his teammate Eliana di Caro (Il Sole 24 ore), Baschieri also won first place in the mixed doubles. In the final they beat Antonella Piperno (Panorama) winner of the women’s tournament and Andrea Iacono (Corriere del sud), finalist of the men’s libero with the decisive tie break 10/7. Bratislav Bata Janjic, teacher at the Mogliano Tennis Club, won the title of Italian Champion in the over 70 category.

In the final Bata found his old rival Mauro Porcu’ (La Repubblica) already beaten this year in the Winter Championships in Rapallo. This time with the clear score of 6/2 6/1. However, the result does not at all reflect two hours of battle under the Calabrian sun and decidedly unseasonable temperatures. To win the title Bata had to save 36 “break points”. Marca’s third journalist, Fabio Poloni, lost two semi-finals. First he was beaten by the winner Riccardo Ceccagnoli (Canale 5) in two sets and then in the doubles paired with Iacono, losing against the Roman couple Valentini/Ceccagnoli. The Treviso journalists’ next commitment will be the World Championships in Montenegro.
