Winning the Australian Open and Wimbledon in the same year. A combination that very, very few have achieved in the history of tennis. Only 5 in the Open era have accomplished this feat, and in a few days Jannik Sinner will have the chance to be the sixth. Nothing seems impossible for the South Tyrolean in 2024, and so after conquering Melbourne the thought of also snatching the London slam is there, indeed, given the extraordinary state of form of the Italian. The number one in the world, if he were to succeed (also) in this feat, would truly be in excellent company. The first to succeed was Rod Laver, in 1969, the year of the legendary Australian’s last grand slam and more generally of all men’s tennis. After him, no one has managed to win all four majors in the same year, 55 years later. The Rocket had already achieved the grand slam in 1962, to be fair, but it was still the era of amateurism and not professionalism.

In 1974 it was the turn of another tennis great, the American Jimmy Connors, who won in Australia and London, starting what would be a true domination that would last a few years, until the arrival of Bjorn Borg. Twenty years later, Pete Sampras achieved the Melbourne-Wimbledon double, lifting the cup to the sky of Rod Laver Arena and Centre Court in 1994 and 1997, the first tennis player to win the two majors in the same year twice. Sampras remained the only one for 10 years, until the arrival of Roger Federer. The Swiss champion, 20-time slam winner, won in Melbourne and London in the same year in 2004, 2006, 2007 and 2017, achieving the feat four times in his career. Equaling him a few years later, in 2011, was the “usual” Novak Djokovic: the Serbian scored a double in 2011, 2015, 2019 and 2021. Great feats for great tennis players, and it is now clear that Jannik Sinner looks up to them, to become even more so in the present and in the future.
